  2. Click the “Upload Files” button on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen.

  3. When the upload files dialogue appears, select the “Add File(s)” button and choose the file(s) you would like to upload.

  3. When the save file dialogue box appears, click OK to save the file. The file will save to the download location specified in your browser preferences. If you are downloading an entire folder, it will be compressed in to a .zip file automatically before download. (This may look different depending on the browser you are using and its settings.)

  1. Select the drive and folder you would like to copy files to in the left drive navigation bar and click the “More Actions” button in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Then click Copy Pogoplug Files.

  2. From the drop down list provided, select the drive you would like to copy files from.

  3. Drag the folders or files you would like to copy to the window above. If you wish to copy multiple files at once, click the top-right corner of the desired file icons before dragging. A status bar will appear indicating the progress of the file copying over.

  4. You can right click a file to select options to download, rename, remove, or share. You can select multiple files by clicking the checkbox next to the file or folder. You can also select multiple files by grouping them with the mouse pointer. After selecting multiple files, you can right click to select an option to remove them all, or click the More Actions button on the bottom of the screen to copy or move the files.

  5. If you select the option to Copy/Move Pogoplug files, you can specify whether to copy or move (copy and delete) your files.

Sharing drives and folders connected to your Pogoplug enabled device is quick and easy. You can share with one or multiple people.

To share a drive or folder:

  1. To share an entire drive so all folders and files are shared, select the drive under “My library” on the navigation bar on the left of your screen.

  2. Next, click the “Share This button on the menu bar at the bottom of your screen.

  3. To share a folder on the drive, click the green “Share” icon. Depending on what view you are in, this icon will appear either to the right of the folder in the “Actions” column or at the bottom of the folder icon.

  4. When selecting the “Share This button or the “Share” icon, the sharing options window will open at the bottom of your screen.

  5. Check the checkbox next to “Turn on sharing for folder (Folder Name)” or turn on sharing for Drive (Drive Name)”.

  6. Enter the email address of the person you would like to share the folder with in the textbox located under “Invite People” and click the “Invite” button. You may share with multiple people by adding multiple email addresses separated by either a comma or semicolon. Email addresses you enter are saved into the address book for easy access to email addresses you need to use often.

  7. You have the option to send a message to the user you are sharing with by clicking the link that says, “Include a personalized message”. A text box will appear where you can type your message.

  8. The email address of each person you are sharing with will appear in the table under “People this folder is shared with”.

  9. If you would like to allow a person you are sharing with to upload files (giving them “write” privileges), select Full access from the drop down menu next to their email address.

  10. A link will be emailed to the users you have shared with. If you have given them write privileges, they will need to create a password for themselves. If they do not create a password, they will not be able to upload to the shared folder.

Note: The link to the shared folder will expire 2 weeks from the time it was generated and sent. If the user it is being shared with has not created an account and password they will no longer be able to access the share. If the owner of the share removes them from the share list and re-adds them, a new link will be generated and sent with a 2 week expiration.

You can use “the global search categories Movies, Photos, and Music on the top left side of the screen to display all of the movies, photos, and music that are on your attached hard drives. Click on the category you want (i.e. Movies) and the screen will display all of these files.

The Movies category and the Photos category include a button on the top right corner of the screen that allows you to display your movies and photos by date.

The Music category includes buttons on the top right corner of the screen that allows you to sort your music by songs, artists, albums, and genres.

The Movies, Photos, and Music categories also include a button on the top right corner of the screen that allows you to sort your files by the source location.

If you find a file that you would like to locate on your hard drive(s), but cannot remember exactly where it is located, there is an icon that will take you to the actual location of that file. To do this, hover the mouse pointer over the icon of the file you want to find, and click the folder icon on the top right corner.

You can create slideshows that include your favorite photos, videos, and music.

To create a slideshow follow these steps:

  1. Select the Create Slideshow button on the menu at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Enter a name for the new slideshow in the popup window.

  3. To add files to the slideshow, drag them from the bottom panel to the upper panel.

  4. Use the drop down menu located in the bottom panel to select the location where you would like to get files from for the slideshow.

  5. When you are finished adding everything to your slideshow, click the View Slideshow button on the bottom of the screen to play the slideshow.

  1. In the drive navigation bar on the left of the screen, select the drive and directory where you would like to create the new folder.

  2. Click the More Actions button at the bottom of the page. Then click Create Folder.

  3. Give your new folder a name. You can use “Pics for Mom” or something easy to remember.

The Web application allows you to publish feeds to several social networking web sites. Publishing to Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook is just a few clicks away and notifications will be published to these sites whenever changes are made.

To publish to a social networking site:

  1. In the sharing options window under “More Sharing Options”, click the check box next to the sites you would like to publish to.

  2. Type in the username and password for the site you are publishing to authenticate. Once you type this information, it will be stored for the specific shared folder or drive, so notifications about new files can be published without requiring you to authenticate again for that site. You can use different accounts on the social networking sites for each drive and folder that you share.

  3. Type a message introducing the shared folder to the friends in your social network such as, “Hi everyone, check out the pictures from our trip”. This message along with a link to a public URL will be published to the networking sites you have selected to publish to.

  4. You can keep people informed and up to date by choosing to have updates sent to your social networking feeds whenever changes are made to your shared drives or folders. To do this, click the check box next to Let people know when this folder changes.

Note: You can also change your social networking settings by clicking the Settings button on the top-right corner of the main screen, and then clicking Social settings on the left side of the settings screen.

You are able to publish an RSS feed for each shared drive or folder to keep the community you are sharing with in the loop. To publish an RSS feed:

  1. Select a folder or drive you want to share and follow the steps detailed in the sharing section of this guide.

  3. Copy and paste the link provided into an RSS reader or digital photo frame.

If you would like to allow others to view data on a drive or folder without having to authenticate, you can create a public URL. Under More Sharing Options, after you click the check box next to “Enable Public URL, you will be provided with a URL that links directly to the drive or folder you are sharing.

You can then email, text, or copy and paste that URL anywhere you would like. The link will not expire as long as the “Enable Public URL” check box is selected.

Once you have set up your share and notification feeds, you can go one step further and keep people informed when changes occur to drives or folders you are sharing. Just click the check box next to “Let people know when this folder changes” under “More Sharing Options”.   2. You will see a list of your Pogoplug enabled devices and the drives attached to them. Next to each drive there is a “rename” link. Click the link to enter a new name for the drive.

It is important to eject your drives safely before unplugging the drive from your Pogoplug enabled device. This will prevent any loss of data or file system corruption.

There are two ways to eject your drives safely from the web application.

  1. Locate the drive you would like to eject in the drive navigation bar on the left hand side of the page. Click the eject icon right next to the name of the drive.

  2. From the settings menu, locate your drive in the list of drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device(s). Click the “eject” link next to the drive you would like to remove.

Active Copy can automatically copy photos, videos, music and other files from one folder to another. Whenever you add new files or make changes to an existing file in a folder with Active Copy enabled, these files will be automatically copied to the destination folder you selected.

To setup Active Copy for a folder:

  1. Click on Active Copy in the left-side of the main screen of the web application.

  2. Next, click the button Set up Active Copy on a new folder.

  3. Choose the desired source and destination folders and click OK.

    From the settings window you can update your email addresses and manage the Pogoplug enabled device(s) associated with your account.

    Your email addresses

    You have the ability to associate multiple email addresses with your account. Each email address has full access to all drives and shares associated with the account.

    To add additional email addresses to your account, simply click the “add” link next to “Your email addresses”.

    Email attachments

    Check the checkbox next to Upload my email attachments to: and email attachments sent from your email address to upload@mypogoplug.com will be uploaded to the folder that you select here.

    After you specify a folder, you can change it by clicking on the change link that appears.

    You can use Pogoplug to stream movies, photos and music to your XBox360 and PS3 game consoles, and to the game consoles of people you share with. To enable this feature, select the checkbox next to the hard drive(s) you want to enable.

    The Media Settings screen also allows you to customize the options for how the Pogoplug handles videos. There are 3 options: optimize videos for playback (convert into web friendly H.264 encoding), process media meta-data (fetch music album art, iPhoto dates, etc.), and generate thumbnails (which allows for previewing). All of these options can be turned on or off.

    You can preview a video by hovering the mouse pointer over the thumbnail for a video. You can turn off this feature on the Media Settings page by deselecting the checkbox for Preview videos when hovering over video thumbnails.

    Changing your Password

    Click the “Change Password” button to change the password associated with your account.

    Full Security

    Click the checkbox next to Use full security sessions to enable SSL (HTTPS) throughout your entire Pogoplug session. Enabling this option may slow down access to your Pogoplug. Note that even if this option is disabled, you will always automatically sign in with full security, keeping your password and account access safe.

    Require sign-in to view email shares

    Click the checkbox next to Require sign-in to view email shares to require the people you share with to enter a password before viewing the contents of the share. If they have not previously assigned a password with Pogoplug, they will be prompted to add one. This feature can also be enabled after you select the file or folder you would like to share by clicking the Share This button, then clicking More sharing options. Check the checkbox next to Require sign-in to view this share.

    Enable SSH

    Click the checkbox if you would like to enable SSH access for your Pogoplug enabled device. The default username is root and if you forget your password, just uncheck and recheck the checkbox.

    With the Pogoplug drive application software you are able to make all drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device appear like drives that are attached directly to your computer. Because the software is client based and your drives are not actually attached to your computer, there are some limitations to what you can do with them.

    You will not be able to perform any drive maintenance on the drives attached to the Pogoplug enabled device. In order to do maintenance on your drives, they need to be attached directly to your computer.

    With the drive application you are also able to see and access all drives and folders shared with you via the “Files Shared with me” folder.

    1. Begin the install process by clicking on the .zip file you downloaded from the Pogoplug web site.

    2. When you click on the .zip file, the install package will unzip to your Mac desktop.

    3. Click the install package and install the drive software.

    4. Once you have installed the software, navigate to your applications folder, find the Pogoplug drive software and start the application.

      The Pogoplug drive software preferences dialogue box will appear. Type in the email address you have set up for your Pogoplug account and your password.

      Through the preferences dialogue, you have the ability to fine-tune your experience with the Pogoplug drive application. To have the application automatically populate with your username and password when launched, select Remember me on this computer. If you would like the drive application to launch automatically when you login to your computer, select Automatically start Pogoplug Drive on login.

    Single Drive vs. Multiple Drive View

    Multiple Drive View

    If you select Enable multi-drive mode, this means that once you have logged in, you will see Pogoplug icons that represent each of the drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device appear on your desktop (if you have the finder preference selected to show hard disks). You will also see an icon that represents all files shared with the email address you have used to authenticate.

    If you do not have the finder preference selected to view your hard disks on the desktop, click “Go” on the Mac tool bar and select “Computer” to navigate to your Pogoplug virtual drives.

    Single Drive View

    If you have not selected “Enable multi-drive mode in the Pogoplug preferences, you will see one virtual drive that represents your Pogoplug enabled device(s) and all of the drives attached. If you click this drive, you will then see all drives attached to the Pogoplug enabled device as well as files shared with the email address you have used to authenticate.

    Click one of your virtual drives and notice that they appear just like any of the hard drives that are attached to your computer. Most of the basic data management functionality that is available when working with local drives is available to you when using the Pogoplug virtual drives.

    Note: You have the ability to eject the virtual drives appearing on your desktop by dragging them to the trash or clicking the eject button next to the drive in the browser view. This will remove the drives from your desktop and they will no longer be available via the Pogoplug drive application. However, you are not safely ejecting them from your Pogoplug enabled device so they can be physically removed. To safely eject your hard drives, please use http://my.pogoplug.com

    When the Pogoplug Drive application is running on your Mac, you will see a Pogoplug icon in the menu bar in the upper right corner of your screen. By clicking this icon, you can view what login has been used to authenticate the Pogoplug software as well as the version you are running, preferences, and the choice to logout.

    Updating

    If the Pogoplug icon is showing with an exclamation point, this means you will need to update to the most current version of the Pogoplug drive software. To update, click the icon and select “Get Upgrade”. This will launch the Pogoplug downloads page where you can download the most current version.

    Logging Out

    If you need to logout of the software and login as a different user, click the Pogoplug icon and select preferences. Next, click the Sign Out button and type in the email address and password for the other account you want to use.

    1. Begin the install process by double-clicking on the installer file you downloaded from the Pogoplug web site.

    2. Depending on your Windows settings, you may be asked if you would like to run this software. Click “Run” to start the installation process.

    4. The Pogoplug drive software preferences dialogue box will appear. Type in the email address you have set up for your Pogoplug account and your password.

      Through the preferences dialogue, you have the ability to fine-tune your experience with the Pogoplug drive application. If you would like the drive application to launch automatically when you login to your computer, select Automatically start Pogoplug Drive on login.

    Single Drive vs. Multiple Drive View

    If you select Enable multi-drive mode, this means that once you have logged in, you will see multiple drive assignments (i.e. drive P:) that represent each of the drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device. You will also see a drive assignment that represents all files shared with the email address you have used to authenticate.

    Single Drive View

    If you have not selected Enable multi-drive mode in the Pogoplug preferences and login, a navigation window will appear showing you the contents of the P: drive on your computer. The system will default to assigning the letter “P” to your Pogoplug enabled device. However, if this drive letter is already in use, the system will choose the next drive letter available.

    This drive is the virtual drive representing the Pogoplug enabled device and all drives attached to it. You will also see the drives shared with the email address you have used to authenticate the account in the folder “Files shared with me”.

    Another way to access your Pogoplug drive is through the “My Computer” window of Windows Explorer. From this view you can verify what drive letter has been assigned to your Pogoplug enabled device as well as access all drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device. To launch “My Computer”, click the Windows start button and select “My Computer from the list”.

    Click one of your virtual drives and notice that they appear just like any of the hard drives that are attached to your computer. Most of the basic data management functionality that is available when working with local drives is available to you when using the Pogoplug virtual drives.

    When the Pogoplug Drive application is running on your PC, you will see a Pogoplug icon in the system tray at the lower right corner of your screen. To access your P: drive directly, double-click this icon. By right clicking this icon, you can view what login has been used to authenticate the Pogoplug software as well as the version you are running, preferences, and the choice to logout. If the Pogoplug icon is not showing up on your Windows system tray, you may need to show hidden icons by clicking the white arrow.

    Updating

    If the Pogoplug icon is showing with an exclamation point, this means you will need to update to the most current version of the Pogoplug drive software. To update, right-click the icon and select “Upgrade now” and the update will begin.

    Logging Out

    >If you need to logout of the software and login as a different user, click the Pogoplug icon and select preferences. Next, click the Sign Out button and type in the email address and password for the other account you want to use.

    Performing some basic drive maintenance before disconnecting your hard drive from your computer and connecting it to the Pogoplug enabled device is a good way to ensure your drives are in good health before making the move. The Mac and PC both have tools that easily allow you to repair any inconsistencies in the file systems of your hard drives.

    2. In the Mac toolbar, click “Go” and “Utilities”.

    5. Next click the “Repair Disk” button beneath the details window on the right hand side. A status bar will appear indicating how far along in the process you are.

    6. Once the repair disk function is complete, safely remove your drive by clicking the eject button on the top tool panel of the disk utility interface.

    6. Once the check disk function is complete, safely remove your hard drive by clicking on the “safely remove hardware” icon located in the task bar on the lower right hand side of your Windows desktop. From the pop up menu, select your hard drive to remove.

    Your Pogoplug enabled device was designed to power multiple USB bus powered hard drives and multiple self-powered hard drives. However, if the connected USB bus powered hard drives are drawing too much power, you may begin to experience problems. If you are experiencing issues with multiple drives that are attached to your Pogoplug enabled device, you may want to try using powered drives or a powered hub.

    Before physically removing a hard drive from your Pogoplug enabled device, it is important to eject it safely. When removing any storage device from a host computer without ejecting it first, you run the risk of losing or corrupting data. Your Pogoplug enabled device is no exception to this as it is the host computer for your hard drives. To eject your hard drives safely from the Pogoplug enabled device, visit the Web application. Instructions on ejecting are detailed above in the Web application section of this user guide (within Managing My Pogoplug).

    When connecting your drives to the Pogoplug enabled device for the first time, it will need to index all of the files located on the drives. Depending on how much data you have stored on your drive, or multiple drives, this could take some time. All files on your drives will be available immediately.     At Pogoplug, we use best practices from the industry to ensure the security of our users’ data. Ultimately, security is a very complex topic and encryption alone is not a complete security solution, nor is a single security solution ideal for all cases. Additionally, more security can often lead to reduced usability and convenience (often in ways that users don’’t fully understand). We believe that the security solutions we choose are the correct mix of usability and security for most users.

    Ultimately none of your personal data is stored in our servers other than your email address. All of the data on your drives attached to your Pogoplug enabled device remain only on your Pogoplug enabled device in your house unless being actively accessed by yourself or someone else you shared content with. While it is being accessed, the data may be forwarded through our servers, but no copies are retained during this process. Removing any or all of the content from access is as simple as unplugging the Pogoplug enabled device, the drive, or deleting the file off the drive.

    The access control mechanism used to access your Pogoplug enabled device is the email address and password you chose at activation. The security of your data hinges on the fact that you have selected a good password that is not easily guessed and is not compromised. We recommend good password practices including choosing passwords that are 8 or more characters and include letters in upper and lower case, numbers, and other punctuation marks. You should change your password on a regular basis through the settings page of the Web application web UI.

    Pogoplug offers optional fully encrypted access to your files through the HTTPS protocol. This protocol is the same encryption security that your online banking system uses to protect your account access. A link to the secure website is available on the login page by clicking the secure sign-in link.

    This method of access is optional because it can significantly reduce the performance of your access to your files when you are on the same network as your Pogoplug enabled device. Due to the security models that are employed in all modern web browsers, all traffic delivered over the HTTPS protocol must be delivered through our service. If you are on the same network as your Pogoplug enabled device but are accessing your files via HTTPS, we must send all the data out over your Internet connection and then back to your browser. We recommend using the standard HTTP protocol when accessing your Pogoplug enabled device inside your house.

    You can also enable HTTPS for the entire Pogoplug session by selecting the option in the settings menu. Please refer to the General Settings section of this guide for more information (within Managing my Pogoplug).

    We recommend becoming familiar with your home network topology. Pogoplug enabled devices works with most consumer home networking equipment. If you are attempting to use the drive software from a corporate location, and it’ is not working, chances are you are behind a proxy server that cannot be disabled. If you have a proxy server set up on your home network, we recommend disabling it if you would like to use the drive appli­cation software to link to the drives connected to your Pogoplug enabled device.

    Your Pogoplug enabled device will not function properly if you have a firewall set up that blocks the transmis­sion of UDP packets or if UDP is turned off in your router configuration. The following details should help you get the necessary UDP packets to be unfiltered:

    Your Pogoplug enabled device will attempt to send outbound UDP packets through the default gateway as­signed by DHCP to service.pogoplug.com port 4365. It expects to be able to hear back UDP from the same host from the same port to the local port it sent them from (which is random). Most NAT routers will have UDP session management that allows outbound UDP to implicitly allow responses back to the source machine and port. If you have custom firewall rules in your router, you will need to add a rule from the Pogoplug enabled device in and out to service.pogoplug.com port 4365.

    Once the Pogoplug enabled device hears back from UDP responses to its initial probes to the Pogoplug service, the LED should go solid green. If we fail to hear UDP responses back from the probes, the LED goes solid red.
